Platacanthomyidae was named by Alston (1876) [includes Neocometes
originally entered as a subfamily]. It is extant.
It was reranked as the subfamily Platacanthomyinae by Mein and Freudenthal (1971), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Steppan et al. (2004).
It was assigned to Cricetidae by Mein and Freudenthal (1971); to Muridae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Muroidea by Steppan et al. (2004).
