Theocotylissa was named by Foreman (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 686]. Its type is Eucyrtidium ficus. It was considered unknown by Foreman (1973).

It was reranked as Theocotyle (Theocotylissa) by Sanfilippo et al. (2003).

It was assigned to Theoperidae by Foreman (1973); to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Theocotyle by Sanfilippo et al. (2003).
