Squalodon hypsispondylus was named by Brandt (1874) [Kellogg (1923) states that the type specimen is in the Museum Franciso-Carolinum at Linz, Austria. Brandt (1874) give no type locality. Kellogg (1923) suggests that it may have been collected in the vicinity of Linz.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Linz, which is in a Chattian open shallow subtidal sandstone in the Linzer Sanden Formation of Austria.
