Delphinus molassicus was named by Bronn (1837). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Baltringen, which is in a Burdigalian marine horizon in Germany.
It was synonymized subjectively with Arionius servatus by Bronn (1853) and Pictet (1853); it was synonymized subjectively with Squalodon servatus by Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Squalodon molassicus by Kellogg (1923) and Symeonidis et al. (2004).
