Balaenoptera davidsonii

Taxonomy
Eschrichtius davidsonii was named by Cope (1872). Its type specimen is ANSP 12922, a mandible (partial left dentary), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cabrillo Canyon, which is in a Piacenzian offshore shelf horizon in the San Diego Formation of California.

It was recombined as Cetotherium davidsonii by Cope (1896), Hay (1902) and Hay (1930); it was recombined as Balaenoptera davidsoni by Trouessart (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Balaenoptera acutorostrata by Barnes and McLeod (1984) and Mead and Brownell (2005); it was recombined as Balaenoptera davidsonii by Cope (1890), Deméré (1986), Deméré et al. (2005) and Uhen et al. (2008).
