Semidistichophyllum was named by Deng and Kong (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 836]. Its type is Semidistichophyllum guizhouensis.

It was assigned to Margarophylliidae by Deng and Kong (1984); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
