Taxonomy
Lessemsaurus was named by Bonaparte (1999). Its type is Lessemsaurus sauropoides. It was considered monophyletic by Pol and Powell (2007).
It was assigned to Melanorosauridae by Bonaparte (1999) and Galton and Upchurch (2004); to Prosauropoda by Apesteguía (2005); to Sauropodomorpha by Pol and Powell (2007); to Sauropoda by Upchurch et al. (2007), Smith and Pol (2007), Yates (2010), Apaldetti et al. (2011) and Otero and Pol (2013); to Sauropodiformes by McPhee et al. (2015); and to Lessemsauridae by Apaldetti et al. (2018).
