Taxonomy
Maclurites magna was named by Le Sueur (1818). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Maclurites.
It was recombined as Maclurea magna by Emmons (1842) and Hall (1847); it was recombined as Maclurea magnus by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); it was corrected as Maclurites magnus by Raymond (1902), Raymond (1908), Twenhofel (1938), Knight (1941), Wilson (1951), Banks and Johnson (1957), Yü (1961), Rohr (1980), Rohr et al. (1992), Rohr and Yochelson (1999) and Wagner (2023).
