Maclurea bigsbyi was named by Hall (1861). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Maclurites bigsbyi by Wilson (1951), Banks and Johnson (1957), Rohr (1980) and Rohr and Yochelson (1999); it was recombined as Maclurina bigsbyi by Wagner (1999) and Wagner (2023).
