Stephanaria was named by Verrill (1867) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R Sepkoski's reference number: 796]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Psammocora by Veron and Pichon (1976); it was reranked as Psammocora (Stephanaria) by López-Pérez (2005).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Psammocora by López-Pérez (2005).
