Stephanocyathus was named by Seguenza (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 86]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Caryophylliinae by Wells (1956); to Caryophyllidae by Squires and Demetrion (1992); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
