Acaenasuchus was named by Long and Murry (1995).

It was synonymized subjectively with Desmatosuchus by Heckert and Lucas (1999) and Heckert and Lucas (2002).

It was assigned to Stagonolepididae by Long and Murry (1995) and Irmis (2005); and to Desmatosuchinae by Parker (2007).
