Substuoresia was named by Deng and Kong (1984) [Sepkoski's age data (misspelled as Substuoresis): Tr Ladi Sepkoski's reference number: 919]. Its type is Substuoresia shizongensis.

It was assigned to Thamnasteriidae by Deng and Kong (1984); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
