Oxynopterides was named by Candèze (1857). It is extant.

It was corrected as Oxynopterinae by Lawrence and Newton (1995) and Bouchard et al. (2011); it was reranked as the tribe Oxynopterini by Kundrata et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Elateridae by Lawrence and Newton (1995) and Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Dendrometrinae by Kundrata et al. (2021).
