Selkirkia was named by Walcott (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo Cm uMid-m Sepkoski's reference number: 883]. Its type is Orthotheca major. It is the type genus of Selkirkiidae.

It was assigned to Canadidae by Walcott (1911); to Selkirkiidae by Conway Morris (1977) and Conway Morris and Robison (1988); and to Priapulida by Sepkoski (2002).
