Salpingostomatinae was named by Koken and Perner (1925) [ranked by Horný 1962 (ref# 13137)]. Its type is Salpingostoma.

It was reranked as the tribe Salpingostomatides by Knight et al. (1960); it was reranked as the family Salpingostomatidae by Horný (1962), Horný (1963) and Golikov and Starobogatov (1975).

It was assigned to Bellerophontidae by Koken and Perner (1925); to Bucaniinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Bellerophontacea by Horný (1963); to Bellerophontoidea by Horný (1962) and Golikov and Starobogatov (1975); and to Bucaniidae by Wahlman (1992) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
