Canadia was named by Walcott (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-l Cm uMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 370,1041]. Its type is Canadia spinosa. It is the type genus of Canadidae.

It was assigned to Canadidae by Walcott (1911); to Phyllodocemorpha by Sepkoski (2002); and to Annelida by Caron and Jackson (2008).
