Rhytinidae was named by Gill (1872). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hydrodamalidae by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Halicoroidea by Gill (1872); to Sirenia by Cope (1890); to Sirenii by Jaekel (1911); and to Sirenia by Lydekker (1887), Cope (1889), Flower and Lydekker (1891), Turner (1912) and Weber (1928).
