Scelocopris was named by Zhang (1989). It is not extant. Its type is Scelocopris enertheus.

It was assigned to Scarabaeidae by Zhang (1989); to Scarabaeinae by Krell (2000); and to Scarabaeoidea by Tarasov et al. (2016).
