Aphaena was named by Guerin and Meneville (1833) [misspelled as Aphana]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Aphana by Scudder (1890).

It was assigned to Fulgorinae by Scudder (1878) and Scudder (1890); and to Fulgoridae by Scudder (1877), Zhang (1989) and Szwedo et al. (2004).
