Kronokotherium brevimaxillare was named by Pronina (1957). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Raktinskaya, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in the Russian Federation. It is the type species of Kronokotherium.
It was synonymized subjectively with Desmostylus hesperus by Domning (1996).
