Taxonomy
Proneotherium was named by Kohno et al. (1995). Its type is Proneotherium repenningi.
It was assigned to Odobaenidae by Deméré et al. (2003) and Kohno (2006); to Imagotariinae by Kohno et al. (1995) and Barnes (2008); and to Odobenidae by Berta (2002), Berta (2009), Boessenecker and Churchill (2013), Berta (2017), Magallanes et al. (2018), Berta (2018) and Berta et al. (2018).
