It was recombined as Eumetopias (Phocarctos) hookeri by Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Eumetopias hookeri by Turner (1912); it was recombined as Neophoca hookeri by Scheffer and Rice (1963); it was recombined as Phocarctos hookeri by Gray (1871), Allen (1880), Trouessart (1904), Riedman (1990), Brunner (2004), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Cullen et al. (2014) and Berta et al. (2018).
