Phoca maeotica was named by Nordmann (1860) [HMZ = Museum of Zoology, Helinki Finland (lectotype)
Museum of Zoology, Helinki Finland (lectotype)]. Its type specimen is N1815, a limb element (femur), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Chisinau, which is in a Sarmatian marine horizon in Moldova.
It was recombined as Monatherium maeoticum by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904) and Friant (1947); it was recombined as Monotherium maeoticum by Kellogg (1922), McLaren (1960) and Hendey (1972); it was recombined as Cryptophoca maeotica by Koretsky and Ray (1994), Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al. (2003), Koretsky and Barnes (2006), Koretsky and Domning (2014) and Berta et al. (2022).
It was recombined as Monatherium maeoticum by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904) and Friant (1947); it was recombined as Monotherium maeoticum by Kellogg (1922), McLaren (1960) and Hendey (1972); it was recombined as Cryptophoca maeotica by Koretsky and Ray (1994), Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al.
