Bucanopsis modesta was named by Girty (1909). It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Knightites (Retispira) modesta by Yochelson (1960); it was recombined as Knightites (Retispira) modestus by Winters (1963); it was recombined as Retispira modesta by Kulas and Batten (1997), Mazaev (2019) and Wagner (2023).
