Taxonomy
Wiwaxia was named by Walcott (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 809]. Its type is Orthotheca corrugata. It is the type genus of Wiwaxidae.

It was assigned to Wiwaxidae by Walcott (1911) and Conway Morris and Robison (1988); to Sachitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Halwaxida by Conway Morris and Caron (2007); to Metazoa by Bambach et al. (2007); and to Annelida by Caron and Jackson (2008).
