Strobilepis was named by Hall and Clarke (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1224]. It is the type genus of Strobilepidae.

It was assigned to Strobilepidae by Hoare and Mapes (1995); and to Strobilepida by Sepkoski (2002).
