Kelanella was named by Missarzhevsky (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. Its type is Kelanella altaica.

It was assigned to Mitrosagophora by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tommotiidae by Devaere et al. (2014).

L. Devaere et al. 2014Symmetric to asymmetric phosphatic regular to irregular polyhedron-shaped sclerites with two to four facets: a large gridded facet opposed to a duplicature devoid of ornamentation but with growth lines. The two sides are in contact or separated by one to two transitional lateral facets. Typical gridded ornamentation consists of coarse transverse ridges and longitudinal, rarely branching, folds radiating from apex. Apertural margin of gridded facet broadly folded. Apex sharp, featureless and inclined and at opposite extremity to aperture. Internal cavity subdivided by curved, transverse, vesiculose septa. Scleritome composed, at least, of five types identified by their number of faces, dimensions, arrangement and ornamentation:
Type A: bilaterally symmetrical to subsymmetrical sclerites with crescent-shaped cross-section bordered by broad, convex, gridded facet opposite to strongly concave duplicature bearing fine, transverse, sinusoidal ridges parallel to the apertural sinus. Presence of two narrow, triangular lateral facets. Deep duplicature and lateral, marginal sinus.
Type B: asymmetrical sclerites. Apex subcentrally placed, curved over the duplicature. Cross-section crescent-like. Very wide and convex gridded facet with a lateral sulcus expressed as a notch in the margin. Narrow and smooth, slightly convex duplicature flanked by two flat to slightly concave, oblique and steep lateral facets. Duplicature marginal sinus broad but shallow.
Type C: asymmetrical sclerites, apex curved laterally. Cross-section concavo-convex to rectangular delimited by narrow and concave lateral facets separating planar to slightly convex large, gridded facet from concave duplicature. Lateral facets projecting inward in the basal portion of the sclerite, forming two (inner) flanges bordering a strongly concave duplicature. Duplicature marginal sinus broad but shallow; lateral facets slightly asymmetric.
Type D: asymmetrical, slightly twisted sclerites with crescent to triangular cross-section (from aperture to the apex), a broad, strongly convex, gridded facet opposite to concave, smooth duplicature. Lateral facets absent. Duplicature highly reduced by a large marginal sinus underlined by growth lines.
Type E: asymmetrical, slightly twisted sclerites with triangular cross-section bordered by a broad, convex and large gridded facet; a smaller, concave transitional, lateral facet separated from the deeply concave duplicature by a crest. Large duplicature marginal sinus reducing, in smaller proportion, the lateral facet margin.
