Eccentrotheca was named by Landing et al. (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-l Cm Boto-l Sepkoski's reference number: 655,1006]. It was considered monophyletic by Skovsted et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Tommotiidae by Landing (1984) and Hinz (1987); to Tommotiida by Sepkoski (2002); to Phoronida by Skovsted et al. (2008); and to Brachiopoda by Balthasar et al. (2009).
