Coleolus was named by Hall (1879) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-l C Tour-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2,522,1030]. It is the type genus of Coleolidae.

It was assigned to Coleoloida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Coleolidae by Fisher (1962), Rozanov et al. (1969) and Malinky and Skovsted (2004).
