Taxonomy
Loxonema gigantea was named by Webster (1888). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Westerna.

It was recombined as Westernia gigantea by Fenton and Fenton (1924); it was recombined as Westerna gigantea by Webster (1905), Knight (1941), Day (1987) and Wagner (2023).
