Melania rugifera was named by Phillips (1836). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Loxonema rugifera by Haughton (1859); it was recombined as Loxonema rugiferum by Trenkner (1867) and Amler and Heidelberger (2003); it was recombined as Zygopleura rugifera by Longstaff (1933); it was recombined as Palaeozygopleura (Nodozyga) rugifera by HornĂ½ (1955); it was recombined as Palaeostylus (Stephanozyga) rugiferus by Batten (1966); it was recombined as Palaeostylus (Stephanozyga) rugifera by Gromczakiewicz-Lomnicka (1972); it was recombined as Stephanozyga rugifera by Kase (1988); it was recombined as Nodozyga rugifera by Wagner (2023).
