Maclurea crassa was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Maclurina crassa by Schuchert (1900); it was recombined as Maclurites crassus by Roy (1941) and Rohr (1980); it was recombined as Maclurites crassa by Hussey (1928), Teichert (1937) and Wagner (2023).
