Maclurea oceana was named by Billings (1865). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Maclurites oceanus by Rohr (1980); it was recombined as Teiichispira oceana by Wagner (1999); it was recombined as Maclurites oceana by Desbiens et al. (1996), Boyce et al. (2000) and Wagner (2023).
