Murchisonia obesa was named by Whidborne (1892) [Murchisonia? obesa Whidborne 1892a]. It is not extant. Its type locality is Wolborough Quarry, on the east side of the A381 due east of Wolborough church, which is in a Givetian carbonate limestone in the Torquay Formation of the United Kingdom.
