Taxonomy
Natica variata was named by Phillips (1836). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Naticopsis variata by Weir (1925); it was recombined as Naticopsis (Naticopsis) variata by Batten (1966), Gromczakiewicz-Łomnicka (1973), Rollins (1975) and Pan (1997); it was recombined as Trachydoma variata by Wagner (2023).
