Platyceras (Orthonychia) baldwini was named by Rohr et al. (1981) [Platyceras (Orthonychia) baldwini Rohr, Boucot & Perry 1981]. Its type specimen is GSC, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Orthonychia baldwini by Wagner (2023).
