Pileopsis vetusta was named by Sowerby (1829). Its type specimen is PG 43510, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Capulus vetustus by Lamplugh et al. (1905); it was recombined as Platyceras vetustus by Hudson et al. (1966); it was recombined as Platyceras vetusta by Conrad (1840), Tassell (1977) and Wagner (2023).
