Taxonomy
Pinnocaris americana was named by Pojeta and Runnegar (1976). Its type specimen is USNM 209898, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Elkader, which is in a Shermanian carbonate limestone in the Dunleith Formation of Iowa.
