Nectocaris was named by Conway Morris (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Nectocarididae.

It was assigned to Problematica by Sepkoski (2002) and Bambach et al. (2007); and to Nectocarididae by Conway Morris (1976), Smith and Caron (2010) and Smith (2013).

M. R. Smith 2013Dorsoventrally flattened, non-segmented, torpedo-shaped body with no mineralized skeletal components. Small head bearing a pair of eyes on short stalks and two flexible anterior tentacles. Symmetrical denticulate chevrons posterior of mouth. Hollow funnel extruding from the ventral surface of a short neck and becoming broader as it enters a large, open axial cavity that contains paired gills. Robust serially repeated internal elements concentrically surrounding lateral sides of axial cavity. Fine superficial striations spanning lateral fins.
