Costatheca was named by Rozanov et al. (1969) [Missarzhevsky in Rozanov et al. 1969; Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Sepkoski's reference number: 268]. Its type is Quadrotheca clinisepta.

It was assigned to Circothecida by Sepkoski (2002).
