Laratheca was named by Rozanov et al. (1969) [Missarzhevsky in Rozanov et al. 1969; Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-l Cm Tomm-u Sepkoski's reference number: 268,522]. Its type is Laratheca nana.

It was assigned to Circothecidae by Rozanov et al. (1969); and to Circothecida by Sepkoski (2002).
