Bellerophon oehlerti was named by Bergeron (1889). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Peelerophon.

It was recombined as Peelerophon oehlerti by Yochelson (1982), Jell et al. (1984), Frýda (1989) and Wagner (2023).
