Ceratotheca was named by Novak (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl D Gedi Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is the type genus of Ceratothecidae.

It was assigned to Ceratothecidae by Fisher (1962); and to Orthothecida by Sepkoski (2002).
