Taxonomy
Purella squamulosa was named by Qian and Bengtson (1989). Its type locality is Bed 10, Sample Xx, 159a, Xianfeng Phosphorite Quarry, 23 km west of Xianfeng, which is in a Meishucunian/Tommotian carbonate phosphorite/phosphorite in the Dengying Formation of China.

It was synonymized subjectively with Purella arcana by Parkhaev and Demidenko (2010).
