Orthotheca was named by Novak (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-l D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 1,268,885]. Its type is Orthotheca intermedia. It is the type genus of Orthothecidae.

It was reranked as Hyolithus (Orthotheca) by Holm (1893); it was reranked as Hyolithes (Orthotheca) by Cowper Reed (1909) and Resser and Endo (1937).

It was assigned to Hyolithus by Holm (1893); to Hyolithes by Cowper Reed (1909) and Resser and Endo (1937); to Hyolithidae by Henningsmoen (1952); to Orthothecidae by Fisher (1962) and Malinky (1990); and to Orthothecida by Sepkoski (2002) and Malinky (2003).
