Orthotheca was named by Novak (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-l D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 1,268,885]. Its type is Cryptocaris suavis.

It was reranked as Hyolithus (Orthotheca) by Holm (1893); it was reranked as Hyolithes (Orthotheca) by Reed (1909) and Resser and Endo (1937).

J. M. Malinky 2009Hyoliths having a tightly rounded dorsal ridge, grading into tightly rounded to angular lateral edges; the venter is only slightly concave to nearly flat, and the resulting cross section has a triangular shape. Ornamentation on the shell includes longitudinal ribs or lines.
