Carinolithes was named by Sysoev (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm l O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1,1116]. Its type is Hyolithes pennatulus. It is the type genus of Carinolithidae.
It was assigned to Hyolithida by Sepkoski (2002); to Hyolithidae by Fisher (1962) and Kruse (2002); and to Carinolithidae by Valent et al. (2011).

Valent et al. 2011 | Hyolithid having prominent, narrow, high ridge in the centre of dorsum, with flanks adjacent to it dipping steeply to forma lateral furrow near each edge of the dorsum, and then grading into a low, narrow longitudinal ridge with a broadly rounded surface on each side of the dorsum. Lateral edges are weakly developed and almost rounded. Operculum platyclaviculate (from Berg-Madsen and Malinky 1999). |
