It was corrected as Phascolomyidae by Bonaparte (1850), Cope (1889), Flower and Lydekker (1891), Lydekker (1894), Gadow (1898) and Pocock (1921); it was synonymized subjectively with Vombatidae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
It was assigned to Glires by Gray (1821); to Marsupialia by Bonaparte (1850); to Marsupialia by Lydekker (1894); to Diprotodontia by Cope (1889), Flower and Lydekker (1891) and Gadow (1898); and to Phascolomyoidea by Pocock (1921).
