Hystrixasterias was named by Blake (1990). It is not extant. Its type is Hystrixasterias hettangiurnus.

It was assigned to Asteriidae by Blake (1990); and to Forcipulatida by Sepkoski (2002).

D. B. Blake 1990Asteriid with body wall ossicular series consisting of carinals bordered on each side by one row of small laterals and two of larger laterals; then two marginal rows and three actinal rows on disk, two on arms. Ossicles of various series transitional in morphology. Abactinals arranged in regular transverse and longitudinal rows. Ambulacra moderetly compressed, podial pores quadriserial; first 3 adambulacral pairs forming adoral carina, adambulacrals with transverse series of four prominent spines; large uncrossed clam-shaped pedicellariae present on dorsal surface only.
